Looking to get a .22 rifle

Im looking to add a new gun to my "arsenal", and a .22 would fill the gap, since I currently do not have one.

Off the bat I was thinking a plain jane ruger 10/22, but I know theres a lot of other .22's out there, I just dont know enough about them. Any suggestions to steer me in the right direction? I know its like asking what caliber should I buy, lol. This will also be something my wife will use to plink around with and likley wont see very many "long" ranges.

Its either this or a Mosin Nagant:ok:

Ruger 10/22.

If you don't want one of them then get a Ruger 10/22.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

Ruger 10-22 is good if you don't mind the fat stock and the pathetic little screw holes for scope mounting. The Marlin Model 60 is better balanced and slimmer and is grooved for scope rings but there are not as many options to improve the trigger as on the 10-22. I never got great accuracy out of either one. My most fun .22 is the CZ 452 American (Czech made). It's the most accurate rifle I've ever fired but it's a bolt action.

Marlin Model 60 will compete head to head with the Ruger.

Marlin model 60 or Ruger 10/22. I have both!

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

The Ruger 10-22 is a fun plinker. Reasonably accurate, easy to accessorize, heavy trigger. A knock-around favorite for kids of all ages.

Ruger also makes a model 77/22 bolt rifle which is also a fine shooter. New ones use the same mags as the 10-22.

The CZ 452 Lux is more of an adult's rifle. Beautiful, classic walnut stock, smooth trigger, accurate, quality.

How about a nice bolt action Savage? Like a Mark II BV. Do you want a semi?

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

10/22 or go classic like a 40's winchester bolt or something. Also, we are all interpreting your post to mean rifle.

Edit: and the reason for that interpretation was surprisingly found in the thread title! I suppose I should go to sleep, eh?

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

THanks for all the ideas guys.

Dave, yes, I was lookign for semi because they are a bit more fun at the range, but bolt isnt out of the question. My first rifle shooting experience when i was younger was a bolt action .22, so they do have a place in my heart ;).

I dont need anything super accurate, but also its partly for the inevitable iguana war (any one from south florida knows exactly how bad it is).

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

When it comes to .22's, I'm more of a bolt guy than a semi guy.
I'm of the opinion that the CZ 452 .22LR bolt guns are probably the best you can get for a reasonable amount of money, but the Ruger 77/22 (which I currently own) is VERY nice as well. The added benefit of the 77/22 is that you can use the same mags as the Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic, so if you end up with both guns you won't have an extra expense buying a bunch of magazines over again. One other option to look at (if you're on a budget) is the Mossberg 702 .22LR Semi-Automatic that you can buy at Wal-Mart for $107+tax. I don't own one, or know anyone who does, but every forum post I've read about it has been positive, and overall the general opinion seems to be that it's quite a gun for the money!
Hope all this helps.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

The CZ 452 Lux, is a nice rifle. I just picked one up 2months ago. At 50 yards it will shoot one ragged one.
The chamber is tight, so it prefers standard 22LR ammo.
It will shoot 22 Shorts, and with that long barrel the report is very quiet.
If the need was for an accurate 22LR for game hunting, it would be hard to find a better choice.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

I went through this process a few months ago and settled on a Henry lever-action, which has worked out great. Tube magazine holds 16 lr or 21 shorts. Very accurate with iron sights. Non-threatening cowboy style won't scare the neighbors.

Heim, my friend, you and I are on the same wavelength. I bought a "plane jane" ruger 10/22 today (but she looks hot to me)!

You're welcome to try her out when I pick her up in 5 days.

PS - Please don't kill the iguanas. They can come live at my house.

haha, I might have to take you up on that offer. Gun show is this weekend btw. I was gonna check it out, but will probably head over to gander mt to pick up a .22 sicne gun show prices tend to be a little higher than normal.

As far as the iguanas...they are my mortal enemy and I can offer them no quarter, but I promise I wont kill any that make it to your property. :emotions16:

If I get a .22 before you pick your up, well definitely have to go break em in together. My wifes been wanting to go shooting again too.

Browning Spendy but a class act, and mine is 40 years old.
I also have a Rugar for every member of the family. A Remington 22, A rugar Mark II. And a conversion barrel and slide to convert the Colt 45 to a 22. Makes it cheaper to shoot on the same frame. Gave away a lot of those tube fed Marlins to friends over the years as well as an old model 94 Winchester to a Korea era Marine who still had his silver cross. And a old Belgian Made Browning sweet sixteen to a partner who helped me build a small shop but wouldn't take and money. Sure grabed that Browning though. Get a Browning, everyone will envy you, Browning

Marlin makes a dandy take-down 22 lever action 22 that will digest just about any 22 ammo, shorts, longs, long rifle, even 22 shot shells.

I have a plain 10/22 and stuck a 30 dollar scope my wife got me as a gift on it. Awesome and zero problems. I use it and both my kids can shoot with it.

And if you ever get the itch, there are a ton of mods out there.

Me, too. And I love'em both. I like the detachable mag on the 10/22, but I actually like how the Model 60 handles and shoots better.

You can't go wrong with either.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

Thanks again for all the ideas guys.

I really like some of the ones yall pointed out like the CZ, but some of 'em are jsut a tad too far out of the price range.

From what yall said and reading online, seems like the Marlin 60 and Ruger 10/22 are right what Im looking for and are tied for 1st. Im leaning more towards the Marlin.

This is why it never hurts to ask noob questions, especialy on here!!

EDIT:

Also though too, I see some of the slightly higher priced ones shoot the shorts, longs and LR's and reading online it seems that shooting shorts in a LR is doable, but wont cycle the recoil mechanism on autos and many are suggesting that it could mess up the chamber? Any of yall with the model 60 or 10/22 use shorts or not?

Libertytree 03-18-2010 01:08 AM

22 shorts have one use. And not in a rifle.
No reason for anyone normal to even own any.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

Shorts...well maybe not but CBs are nice when you want to keep things a bit quieter. CBs will shot fine in the 10/22...you will just have to hand cycle the action. And of course they will work well in a bolt gun.

I would vote for the 10/22 simple because there are so many things you can do with it in the future. My ex wanted a light 22 to shoot and starting with a 10/22 made that easy. I was able to build up a very accurate bull barrel that weighs 1/3 less than a stock 10/22 including a scope.

if you want quiet just get the .22LR subsonics and skip the shorts. The subsonics are quiet, I think my Benjamin Sheridan pellet gun is louder then a .22 subsonic

I think he's referring to quiet assassination using a pistol in direct contact to the back of the head.

Back when I was living in a city, I found that shorts are also useful for low-noise indoor basement target practice, when you don't want to piss your neighbors off!

I thought thats what he was saying ;)

Im looking at more for when the iguana take over the area again (they tend to die off/go dormant in winter/cool weather) I dont want to make a ton of noise in my town home community. Then again, we have enough open area Im sure a LR wouldnt be overly noticed.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

I own a 10/22 carbine and am relatively pleased. One of the biggest drawbacks of the 10/22 IMO, is the lack of reliable extended mags. I have tried many brands and the ONLY one that I can find that will work are the TI 25's.

If I had it to do over again I would buy a Kel Tec SU 22, the 30rnd mags are reliable, and in my experience Kel Tec's have been flawless (P32, PLR 22).

I really don't think you can go wrong with the Ruger or the Marlin, they have both stood the test of time, but the Kel Tec offers advantages as well.

I would trade my 10/22 for a SU22 today, if that tells you anything.

The TI magazines look nice, but they're twice the price of the Butler Creek Steel Lips magazines, and I haven't had any problems with my BC Steel Lips. I just took my old 10/22 and my brand new 10/22 out to the range yesterday and put several hundred rounds through them, using nothing but the BC Steel Lips mags and had no failures of any type.

I've tried other brands with plastic lips and had numerous problems with those, so they haven't been used in years.

Also, regarding the 10/22, I was amazed at how much more accurate my new one is than my old one. With the old one, which was made in the mid 90s, I usually shoot 1-1.5 inch groups of 10 rounds at 25 yards. With my very first time shooting the new rifle, with brand new Tech-Sights having just been installed that morning, I shot a sub 1 inch group at 25 yards. I don't know if the improved accuracy is due to the hammer forged barrel used on the newer 10/22s, but I'm not complaining.

I was really surprised that I didn't have to adjust the sights at all, but I guess Tech-Sights is sending them zeroed at 25 yards for use at Appleseed events, which is what I bought mine for. I've got the TSR100 on my old rifle, and the TSR200 on the new one. I love these sights and they're a huge improvement over the stock iron sights.

We were also shooting my Dad's old Marlin 60, which had been put away dirty and not shot since before I was born (I'm 37). I cleaned and oiled it, and took it to the range for a functionality check, but we only put 20 rounds through it, since neither my wife or I liked the sights. Black sights against a black target in a fairly dark indoor range just don't make for easy shooting. I'm guessing in different lighting conditions or with different sights we would have had better results, but I found the Marlin 60 to be less accurate than the 10/22s.

My old 10/22 has the factory wood stock, but I got the new one with the ATI Strikeforce adjustable stock primarily so that my young nieces and nephews can use it at Appleseed events, but it's also great for my wife and my Mom, who are both only 5'2".

I've got a couple of 10/22s here.... Dependable, accurate, easy to clean, cheap to shoot, plenty of add on and mods if you want to go that route...

Lots of fun...

I've never had any issues with any of mine....

However, I am wondering exactly how many 550 round boxes I can put through it till the Barrel is ""Shot Out""..

I'd hate to think of how many rounds we've put through them already.

I was kind of wondering if that was why my older 10/22 is less accurate than my new one. I want to believe it's just because my new one has the super-mega-awesome hammer forged barrel, but I may have to accept that I need to buy a new barrel for my old one.

Heimdhal 03-23-2010 10:48 PM

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle

Alright, Im fairly settled on my decision so far. It is a toss up between a Marlin 795 (since it has a detatchable mag, unlike the 60, other wise few differences it seems), which gander mountain has on sale for $125 on their website

Or a Ruger 10/22.

The reason I am still considering the 10/22 is because of all the aftermarket stuff. I do NOT plan on pimping mah gunz, but I know that in the future I may want to and there are a lot of good things for the 10/22 and the mags are much cheaper (as well as some higher capacity).

My wife is going to go to an appleseed event with me next month and wants to use whatever 22 we get, which is why i went with the marlin 795 over the 60 since the shoot can be a bit demanding on reloading and the box mag will help with that over the tube.

I also went to the store to day to fondle some of the .22's. Unfortunatley they didnt have any marlin 60's or 795's (just some lever action ones), but I wasnt overly thrilled by the feel of the Ruger 10/22. I dont know what it was, it just didnt "feel right".

Very well could be...

If it is, Could be a good time to upgrade to the ""Bull Barrel"" if you are replacing it...

went ahead and ordered the marlin 795. Gander had it for $125 with a rebate, so thats a tough to beat price. Even if I never send the rebate in (which I will!) it was still only $160 and thats a price I can live with. Should be here hopefully this week, but UPS might take longer, as they've been known to do.
