Looking to get a .22 rifle
Im looking to add a new gun to my "arsenal", and a .22 would fill the gap, since I currently do not have one.
Off the bat I was thinking a plain jane ruger 10/22, but I know theres a lot of other .22's out there, I just dont know enough about them. Any suggestions to steer me in the right direction? I know its like asking what caliber should I buy, lol. This will also be something my wife will use to plink around with and likley wont see very many "long" ranges. Its either this or a Mosin Nagant:ok: |

If you don't want one of them then get a Ruger 10/22. CC |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Ruger 10-22 is good if you don't mind the fat stock and the pathetic little screw holes for scope mounting. The Marlin Model 60 is better balanced and slimmer and is grooved for scope rings but there are not as many options to improve the trigger as on the 10-22. I never got great accuracy out of either one. My most fun .22 is the CZ 452 American (Czech made). It's the most accurate rifle I've ever fired but it's a bolt action.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Marlin Model 60 will compete head to head with the Ruger.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Marlin model 60 or Ruger 10/22. I have both!
|
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
The Ruger 10-22 is a fun plinker. Reasonably accurate, easy to accessorize, heavy trigger. A knock-around favorite for kids of all ages.
Ruger also makes a model 77/22 bolt rifle which is also a fine shooter. New ones use the same mags as the 10-22. The CZ 452 Lux is more of an adult's rifle. Beautiful, classic walnut stock, smooth trigger, accurate, quality. |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
How about a nice bolt action Savage? Like a Mark II BV. Do you want a semi?
|
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
10/22 or go classic like a 40's winchester bolt or something. Also, we are all interpreting your post to mean rifle.
Edit: and the reason for that interpretation was surprisingly found in the thread title! I suppose I should go to sleep, eh? |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
THanks for all the ideas guys.
Dave, yes, I was lookign for semi because they are a bit more fun at the range, but bolt isnt out of the question. My first rifle shooting experience when i was younger was a bolt action .22, so they do have a place in my heart ;). I dont need anything super accurate, but also its partly for the inevitable iguana war (any one from south florida knows exactly how bad it is). |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
When it comes to .22's, I'm more of a bolt guy than a semi guy.
I'm of the opinion that the CZ 452 .22LR bolt guns are probably the best you can get for a reasonable amount of money, but the Ruger 77/22 (which I currently own) is VERY nice as well. The added benefit of the 77/22 is that you can use the same mags as the Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic, so if you end up with both guns you won't have an extra expense buying a bunch of magazines over again. One other option to look at (if you're on a budget) is the Mossberg 702 .22LR Semi-Automatic that you can buy at Wal-Mart for $107+tax. I don't own one, or know anyone who does, but every forum post I've read about it has been positive, and overall the general opinion seems to be that it's quite a gun for the money! Hope all this helps. |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
The CZ 452 Lux, is a nice rifle. I just picked one up 2months ago. At 50 yards it will shoot one ragged one.
The chamber is tight, so it prefers standard 22LR ammo. It will shoot 22 Shorts, and with that long barrel the report is very quiet. If the need was for an accurate 22LR for game hunting, it would be hard to find a better choice. http://cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-452-ultra-lux/ |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
I went through this process a few months ago and settled on a Henry lever-action, which has worked out great. Tube magazine holds 16 lr or 21 shorts. Very accurate with iron sights. Non-threatening cowboy style won't scare the neighbors.

You're welcome to try her out when I pick her up in 5 days. PS - Please don't kill the iguanas. They can come live at my house. |

As far as the iguanas...they are my mortal enemy and I can offer them no quarter, but I promise I wont kill any that make it to your property. :emotions16: If I get a .22 before you pick your up, well definitely have to go break em in together. My wifes been wanting to go shooting again too. |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Browning Spendy but a class act, and mine is 40 years old.
I also have a Rugar for every member of the family. A Remington 22, A rugar Mark II. And a conversion barrel and slide to convert the Colt 45 to a 22. Makes it cheaper to shoot on the same frame. Gave away a lot of those tube fed Marlins to friends over the years as well as an old model 94 Winchester to a Korea era Marine who still had his silver cross. And a old Belgian Made Browning sweet sixteen to a partner who helped me build a small shop but wouldn't take and money. Sure grabed that Browning though. Get a Browning, everyone will envy you, Browning |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Marlin makes a dandy take-down 22 lever action 22 that will digest just about any 22 ammo, shorts, longs, long rifle, even 22 shot shells.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
If you already own an AR15 you might consider a 22 conversion kit.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
I have a plain 10/22 and stuck a 30 dollar scope my wife got me as a gift on it. Awesome and zero problems. I use it and both my kids can shoot with it.
And if you ever get the itch, there are a ton of mods out there. |

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Thanks again for all the ideas guys.
I really like some of the ones yall pointed out like the CZ, but some of 'em are jsut a tad too far out of the price range. From what yall said and reading online, seems like the Marlin 60 and Ruger 10/22 are right what Im looking for and are tied for 1st. Im leaning more towards the Marlin. This is why it never hurts to ask noob questions, especialy on here!! EDIT: Also though too, I see some of the slightly higher priced ones shoot the shorts, longs and LR's and reading online it seems that shooting shorts in a LR is doable, but wont cycle the recoil mechanism on autos and many are suggesting that it could mess up the chamber? Any of yall with the model 60 or 10/22 use shorts or not? |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
No need for shorts, use the LR.

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Shorts...well maybe not but CBs are nice when you want to keep things a bit quieter. CBs will shot fine in the 10/22...you will just have to hand cycle the action. And of course they will work well in a bolt gun.
I would vote for the 10/22 simple because there are so many things you can do with it in the future. My ex wanted a light 22 to shoot and starting with a 10/22 made that easy. I was able to build up a very accurate bull barrel that weighs 1/3 less than a stock 10/22 including a scope. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...s/boyd1022.jpg |
Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
if you want quiet just get the .22LR subsonics and skip the shorts. The subsonics are quiet, I think my Benjamin Sheridan pellet gun is louder then a .22 subsonic

Re: Looking to get a .22 rifle
Still have my old Marlin model 99c, looks and shoots great, got a cheap little redfield on it, had a lot of cheap fun with it, and it'll hold 18 LR in the tube:ok:

Back when I was living in a city, I found that shorts are also useful for low-noise indoor basement target practice, when you don't want to piss your neighbors off! |
